4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, low-key bike helmet, May 24, 2010

I'm not a fan of the aerodynamic day-glo style of most bike helmets, so I was pleased to see this offering by Giro. (I also own their Giro E2 Bike Helmet.) I opted for the large size because, like another reviewer, my head is pretty big. I was pleased with the Section in this regard: The large size is roomy and comes with three sets (thin, medium, thick) of internal padding that attach via Velcro. Using combinations of these pads, the helmet can be customized for most head shapes. As the other reviewer notes, those with truly huge noggins may find that the thinnest pads provide limited cushioning in a fall. Removing the pads and substituting a thin wool cap is also an option for cool spring/fall riding.

Compared to other pot style multi-sport helmets, this one is pretty light. Giro claims it's 296g, but that must be... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Appears larger in real life., November 4, 2010

I grew up wearing Protec helmets, but decided to go with something a little more robust this time since I ride next to a busy highway on my way to the bike trails.

This one definitely feels like a thicker/stronger plastic and the helmet itself sticks out a bit further than what I was accustomed to on others. Loses a point on style, but keeps four for functionality, I think my big ears would be mostly tucked away in a face/head plant.

Measured my head to be slightly less than 23" and the medium helmet fits perfect out of the box. I might even switch to the next larger inserts if it starts to feel loose on rougher trails.

4.0 out of 5 stars very big, but surprisingly lightweight, November 23, 2011

I agree with some of the other comments that this helmet looks much bigger in person than it does in the photos. Sportier helmets don't come down so far on the sides and are also tapered at the edges so that they look smaller. This helmet is one thickness all the way from the top to the edges, so you can see that you've got a full inch of plastic and foam surrounding your head all the way around. I've never worn an Army helmet, but I'm guessing that this one looks pretty much like an Army helmet when it is on your head.

On the plus side, this helmet is surprisingly lightweight. The sticker inside my size large helmet says 325 grams and it actually weighs less than my high-end road racing helmet (which is full of big ventilation holes).

Sizing is similar to sportier Giro helmets. My size 7 5/8 head fits in this helmet comfortably, but larger heads may have a hard time. I can't wear some other models of helmets because they don't come in a big enough size, but this... Read more
